The gears can be classified according to the position of shaft axes
A gear is a toothed wheel that engages another toothed mechanism to change speed or the direction of transmitted motion. Gears are generally used to increase or decrease the speed of rotation, to change the amount of force or torque, to move rotational motion to a different axis (i.e. parallel, right angles, rotating, linear etc.); and to reverse the direction of rotation.
Gears are compact, positive-engagement, power transmission elements capable of changing the amount of force or torque.
The gears can be classified according to the position of shaft axes, the peripheral velocity, the type of gears or the teeth position.
According to the relative position of the axes of revolution gears are classified according to, the axes like Parallel shafts where the angle between driving and driven shaft is 0 degree. Examples include spur gears, single and double helical gears, Intersecting shafts where there is some angle between driving and driven shaft. Examples include bevel and miter gear or Non-intersecting and non-parallel shafts where the shafts are not coplanar. Examples include the hypoid and worm gear.
According to the peripheral velocity, gears can be classified as Low velocity type, if their peripheral velocity lies in the range of 1 to 3 m/sec, Medium velocity type, if their peripheral velocity lies in the range of 3 to 15 m/sec or High velocity type, if their peripheral velocity exceeds 15 m/sec.
According to type of gears, gears can be classified as external gears, internal gears, and rack and pinion. External gears mesh externally – the bigger one is called “gear” and the smaller one is called “pinion”, Internal gears mesh internally – the larger one is called “annular” gear and the
smaller one is called “pinion” and Rack and pinion type – converts rotary to linear motion or vice versa. There is a straight line gear called “rack” on which a small rotary gear called “pinion” moves.
According to teeth position gears are classified as straight, inclined and curved. Straight gear teeth are those where the teeth axis is parallel to the shaft axis, Inclined gear teeth are those where the teeth axis is at some angle and Curve gear teeth are curved on the rim’s surface.
Spur gears are used to transmit power between two parallel shafts. The teeth on these gears are cut straight and are parallel to the shafts to which they are attached. Helical gears resemble spur gears, but the teeth are cut at an angle rather than parallel to the shaft axis like on spur gears. The angle that the helical gear tooth is on is referred to as the helix angle. The angle of helix depends upon the condition of the shaft design and relative position of the shafts. To ensure that the gears run smoothly, the helix angle should be such that one end of the gear tooth remains in contact until the opposite end of the following gear tooth has found a contact. For parallel shafts, the helix angle should not exceed 20 degrees to avoid excessive end thrust.
A bevel gear is shaped like a section of a cone and primarily used to transfer power between intersecting shafts at right angles. The teeth of a bevel gear may be straight or spiral. Straight gear is preferred for peripheral speeds up to 1000 feet per minute; above that they tend to be noisy. Mitter gears are identical to bevel gears with the exception that both gears always have the same number of teeth.
Hypoid gears are a modification of the spiral bevel gear with the axis offset. The distinguishing feature of hypoid gears is that the shafts of the pinion and ring gear may continue past each other, never having their axis intersecting. Worm gears are used to transmit power between two shafts that are at right angles to each other and are non-intersecting.
Worm gears are special gears that resemble screws, and can be used to drive spur gears or helical gears. Worm gearing is essentially a special form of helical gearing in which the teeth have line contact and the axes of the driving and driven shafts are usually at right angles and do not intersect.
The rack is a bar with a profile of the gear of infinite diameter, and when used with a meshing pinion, enables the rotary to linear movement or vice versa. Herringbone, also known as double helical gears and are used for transmitting power between two parallel shafts. Double helical gearing offers low noise and vibration along with zero net axial thrust. Internal gears have their teeth cut parallel to their shafts like spur gears, but they are cut
on the inside of the gear blank. The properties and teeth shape are similar as the external gears except that the internal gears have different addendum and dedendum values modified to prevent interference in internal meshes.

7 Types of Gears and Its Functions
Power transmission is the movement of energy from its place of generation to a location where it is applied to performing useful work and gear is a component within a transmission device that transmits the rotational force to another gear or device
The gears are a type of mechanical element whose teeth are cut around a cylindrical or conical surface with the same space. Gears are used for the rotation and transmission of force from the driveshaft to the driven shaft when coupling a pair of elements. The gears can be classified into spiral, cycloid and trochoidal gears according to their shape. They are also classified as parallel shaft gear, transverse shaft gear, and non-parallel and non-transverse shaft gear depending on the position of the shaft.
There are different types of gear like Helical Gear, Spur Gear, Herringbone gears, Bevel Gear, Rack and pinion, and Worm Gear. Helical Gear is cylindrical gears that are used with parallel shafts similar to the spur gears and have winding teeth. Having a better teeth grip than spur gears, they generate less noise and can carry higher loads, which makes them suitable for high-speed applications.
Some of the applications where Helical Gears are used are in the Fertilizer industries, Printing industries, Earthmoving Industries, Rolling Mill, Power and Port Industries, Textile Industries, Plastic Industries, Automobile Gearboxes, and Machine Tool Gearboxes. Helical Gear is used in transmitting torques between parallel or non-parallel shafts, they are not as noisy as spur gears.
The teeth on helical gears are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. This gradual engagement makes helical gears operate much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears. One advantage of helical gears is that if the angles of the gear teeth are correct, they can be mounted on perpendicular shafts, adjusting the rotation angle by 90 degrees.
Herringbone gears are two helical gears of opposite hand e mounted side by side to avoid axial thrust so as to cancel resulting thrust forces. Herringbone gears are mostly used on heavy machinery. Rack and pinion is used to convert rotation (From the pinion) into linear motion (of the rack). The steering systems on many cars use these gears.
Bevel gears are useful when the direction of a shaft’s rotation needs to be changed. They are usually mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees apart but can be designed to work at other angles as well. The teeth on bevel gears can be straight, spiral, or hypoid. They are used in locomotives, marine applications, automobiles, printing presses, cooling towers, power plants, steel plants, railway track inspection machines, etc.
Worm gears are used when large gear reductions are needed. It is common for worm gears to have reductions of 20:1, and even up to 300:1 or greater. An interesting property is that the worm can easily turn the gear, but the gear cannot turn the worm. Worm gears are used widely in material handling and transportation machinery, machine tools, automobiles, etc
Spur Gears are used in transmitting torque between parallel shafts. The teeth are parallel to the axis of rotation. They transmit power from one shaft to another parallel shaft. Some of the applications where spur gears are used are an electric screwdriver, oscillating sprinkler, windup alarm clock, washing machine, and clothes dryer.

6 Types Of Industrial Gearboxes And Their Applications
Industrial gearbox is an enclosed system that transmits mechanical energy to a transmission unit to slow down the speed and torque of rotation. To control speed and torque and convert it functionally, gearbox transmits mechanical power into a driving tool to handle multiple tasks at extremely high speeds over a long period. There are several different types of gearbox. There are four main types of Gearboxes with a wide variety of applications.
Worm Gearbox is commonly used for heavy-duty functions. This gear integrates a broad worm (or screw) diameter which meshes the teeth in the periphery of the gear making it possible for the consumer to determine the rotation speed and for the transmission of higher torque.
Bevel Gears on the other hand have curved teeth on cone-shaped surfaces near the unit bottom which can be used to rotate non-parallel shafts. They have a broad range of applications which includes rolling stock and mining.
Helical gears though similar to spur gears have their teeth cut at an angle to the hole (axis) rather than straight and parallel to the hole like the teeth of a spur gear which help in gradual engagement of teeth from one end of tooth to other rather than a sudden engagement. This gradual engagement makes the gears function smoothly without much noise. Helical gears are used as power transmitting gears as they carry larger loads because of their lower dynamic load have lesser noise and vibration levels.
Planetary gear is made up of three types of gears; a sun gear, planet gears, and a ring gear. The sun gear is located at the centre and transmits torque to the planet gears which are mounted on a moveable carrier. The planet gears orbit around the sun gear and mesh with an outer ring gear. They are used in gearboxes that power basic plant machinery to electric vehicles. Planetary gears are used in applications which demand high torque density, operational efficiency and durability. These gears are widely used in the transmissions of helicopters, automobiles, wind turbine, aircraft engines, etc. The main advantages of this transmission are its high efficiency, its compactness, its large transmission ratio and its large power-to-weight ratio, etc.
The simplest and most common type of gear, Spur gears is cylindrical gear, with shafts that are parallel and coplanar with teeth that are straight and oriented parallel to the shafts. The teeth of a spur gear have an involute profile and mesh one tooth at a time. This means that spur gears only produce radial forces (no axial forces), but because of the tooth meshing, it causes high stress on the gear teeth and high noise production. Due to high noise production, spur gears are used for lower speed applications, although they can be used at almost any speed.
In Bevel gears the axes of the two shafts intersect at a 90-degree angle and the tooth-bearing faces are conical. The teeth can be straight or arranged in a spiral-like pattern. They are designed to suit applications that require changing the direction of a shaft’s rotation useful for a wide range of function in industries. Bevel gears can also increase or decrease torque while producing the opposite effect on the angular speed.

Maintenance of Gearbox is a Crucial Factor in Long Run of Gearbox
Gears are simple machine used to manipulate the magnitude or direction of a force. They are used in combination and are linked together by their teeth in order to form a “gear train”. These gear trains are useful for transferring energy from one part of a system to another. Gears work using the principle of mechanical advantage, which is the ratio of output force to input force in a system.
Gears serve two main purposes either increase the speed or to increase force. An industrial gearbox is a system in which the mechanical energy is transferred from one device to another and is used to increase torque while reducing speed.
Some of the standard gearboxes used in industries are Helical gearboxes, Coaxial helical line, Bevel helical gearboxes, Skew bevel helical gearboxes, Worm reduction gearboxes and Planetary gearboxes. The large-scale industries where gearboxes are extensively used are Paper Industry, Cement industry, Sugar industry and Steel industry
Materials handling, food processing, textile manufacturing, clock making, heavy industrial mining equipment and oil rigging equipment depend on gears for the transmission of motion. Compared to gears applied in commercial and consumer products contexts, industrial gears are usually characterized by heavy duty construction and durable metal composition.
Gear applications are quite diverse and highly customizable; they appear anywhere that an application requires speed reduction, speed increase, power transmission, motion transmission or force reduction.
Maintenance of Gear box is a crucial factor in long run of gear box. Ensure that the gearbox is operating within its manufacturer’s specification for both mechanical and thermal ratings. Gearboxes should be kept away from operating in a dirty and dusty environment as it could result in an increased operating temperature or even possible contamination of the gearbox. Gearboxes should be regularly dusted and brushed clean. Always check for oil leaks at the input and output shaft of your gearbox. Leaks indicate that seals have failed, thus allowing dust, debris and water ingress from the environment; and for a potential loss of lubrication.
Water, dust and debris should also not be permitted to ingress internally into the gearbox through the breather. Allow the gearbox to breathe with ease. Lubrication should be as per the gearbox manufacturer’s specification for type, grade and quantity..
Always checkfor signs of overheating, which could include discoloured or burnt exterior paint, or dark oil in the sight glass. Monitor the gearbox temperature on a regular basis and look out for any sudden changes in temperature using an infrared temperature gun.
Check the internal gears via the removal of inspection covers for signs of wear such as pitting and spalling. Check for any increase in backlash between the mesh of the gears, and also for any increase in the end play or lift at the input and output shafts. An increase in backlash could be an indication of gear teeth wear, which is not always visible to the naked eye. An increase in shaft end play or lift would indicate wear within the rolling elements of the bearings or even wear in the bearing housings.

Industrial Gearbox Repair | Industry Leader | 24/7 Emergency
Industrial gearbox transmits mechanical energy to a transmission unit and in the process slowing down the speed and torque of rotation. The industrial gearbox transmits mechanical power into a driving tool so as to control speed and torque and convert it functionally. Industrial gearboxes can handle multiple tasks at extremely high speeds over a long period.
The gearbox is used for a variety of mechanical operations in different industries. Helical gearboxes, coaxial helical lines, bevel helical gearboxes, skew bevel, and worm reduction gearboxes are some of the main gearboxes used by industries. Paper Industry, Cement industry, Sugar industry, and Steel industry are some of the main industries in which there is a large use of an industrial gearbox.
All gearboxes work in the same way. The rotating directions of the gears depending on the direction of input and the orientation of the gears. For instance, the gear it engages rotates counter-clockwise if the initial gear is turned in a clockwise direction.
Gearboxes are commonly used to monitor the direction of rotation and convert torque or power between inputs in applications that need the desired output speed. The gearbox is used in a variety of applications, including machine tools, construction machinery, transporters, and any device that needs modifications in the torque and speed of rotating movement power transmission.
The physical components of a gearbox vary between its types and the variations between manufacturers. Most gearboxes are made of iron, aluminum, or brass materials. Spur gearboxes are also made using plastics as polycarbonates or nylons, as are other gearbox types. Gear teeth orientation plays an important role in the overall device performance, torque, and speed. Simple gear teeth gearboxes usually are used for low-speed use. These gearboxes can be noisy and overall, less efficient. Usually, helical gearboxes are used for high-speed applications. These gearboxes are slower in operation and can improve overall efficiency than straightening gearboxes.
Regular maintenance is vital for the best performance of industrial gearbox to operate at long-term intervals. The gearbox should be laced in a dry place and placed in a safe area. They should be regularly cleaned and should be free of dust, dirt, and waste. The periodic check should be done to see if any metallic debris is deposited.
Ensure that the gearbox is used as per the thermal and mechanical ratings recommended by the manufacturer. The gearboxes are often worked beyond the prescribed specifications of the manufacturer and work at a higher power than required affecting the equipment efficiency and reduce the shelf life of the equipment.
To prevent overheating, the temperature of the industrial gearbox must be checked periodically and also check if any discoloration or burned marks are there on the housings and disfigured plastic components can be the symptoms of overheating.
Dirt, dust, and moisture can be seen through the breather of the gearbox, hence we must ensure that the right breather is used.
Lubricate the gearbox regularly by using the recommended grade and type of lubricant in a suitable amount suggested by the manufacturer. Always check for oil leakage in the shaft seals for signs of low lubrication. Oil leaks indicate that the seals may not function well and require substitution.
Any irregular noise may indicate components being affected. Regular vibrations examination of the gears and internal bearings can be carried out to test for device misalignment, part cracks, etc.
If you are in need of industrial gearbox repair, we at American Gears LLC offer complete reconditioning on industrial gearboxes of all OEM brands. We are fully equipped to provide all gearbox services performing a complete evaluation of your gearbox. Our in-house design, engineering, and manufacturing services ensure quality workmanship. Rotating Equipment Specialists
Gears are mechanical machines to transmit motion or change the speed. They should be inspected regularly for wear and tear of the parts for their proper working. It is important to maintain the machine parts so as to avoid accidents or damage to machine parts.
Failure of Gearbox causes a complete breakdown of the machinery, which involve both subsequent repair and lost output. Noticing the signs of failing parts early reduces downtime, saving costs and improves machinery health. Some of the most common forms of gearbox failure are inadequate lubrication, contamination, installation errors, overload and handling errors. The major cause is inadequate lubrication caused by under filling, incorrect specification, mixing or incompatibility, incorrect lubrication, deteriorated grease or oil, water contamination and particulate contamination. Inadequate lubrication leads to accelerated wear rates and component failure. Oil acts as a coolant and overheating of oil and parts leads to metal-to-metal contact which leads to the breakdown of the Gearbox. Water contamination destroys the lubricating properties of the oil which causes foaming of the oil. Water in oil can result from either condensation or damaged seals allowing water to enter. Particulate contamination can be from putting dirty oil in, leaving a filling plug open or from wear or failure particles within the gearbox. Particles also accelerate wear and component breakdown.
Overloaded of components caused by exceeding design limits for load, speed or temperature can also damage the gearbox. As the overload increases it shortens the components life. Once the gearbox is overloaded it leads to noise and vibration, increased temperatures, metallic chip debris and reduced equipment performance. Improper handling and installation can also damage the gearbox. This applies in particular to bearings where the cages are particularly prone to careless handling, installation or removal, but can equally apply to misaligned shafts which can then lead to bearing or gear failure
Always check if the gearbox is operating according to the specification of the manufacturer. Often gearboxes operate in a dirty and dusty environment. It is important to see that it is working in a clean environment as dirty and dusty environment could cause an increased operating temperature or even possible contamination of the gearbox. It is necessary that industrial gearboxes be regularly dusted and brushed clean.
Check the seals for any oil leaks at the input and output shaft as leaks indicate that seals have failed which makes dust, debris and water to enter this creates lubrication loss and causes contamination of the gearbox or inadequate lubrication. Check the breathers to see that water, dust and debris do not enter into the gearbox through the breather. They should be kept clean at all times to allow the gearbox to breathe with ease. Lubrication should be as per the manufacturer’s specification for type, grade and quantity.
Overheating of the gear box causes discoloured or burnt exterior paint, or dark oil in the sight glass. Always monitor the gearbox temperature on a regular basis and look out for any sudden changes in temperature using an infrared temperature gun. Look for signs of wear such as pitting and spalling Inspect the contacts between gear teeth for misalignment as this could be indicative of wear in bearings or the bearing housings. Nearly all gearboxes operate in a noisy environment, which means that not all variations or increases in gearbox noise can be recorded. Regular vibration analysis of the internal bearings and gears will confirm any significant changes in the internal condition of the gearbox and help prevent any unplanned loss of production.
Gears are characteristically reliable mechanisms. Unfortunately, however, like all mechanical things, transmissions eventually wear out and ultimately fail to act as efficiently as they were designed to.

The main aim of the transmission industry now is at increasing power density, reducing gear noise and improving energy efficiency levels in gear boxes which means gears will have tighter tolerances, higher profile accuracy and improved surface finish.
Gear manufacturing is a highly skilled and critical machining process and requires application expertise and sophisticated tools & machines. Gears are an integral part of any machines Gears are used in all industries from automobile, ships, locomotives, machine Tools, aerospace, general Eng., medical devices to material handling equipment and so on. .
Gear is an integral part of many industrial products. Gears have a wide range of application in diverse industries such as Automobile, Machine Tools, Aerospace, General Engg. and so on. Manufacturers are now increasingly seeking machine tools and technology for better productivity and quality of gears for that can meet their requirements as there is a growing demand.
The customer expects improved performance, cheaper cost, light weight, better efficiency, minimal noise, and rapid development. The technology of Gear manufacturing has evolved over the years from the traditional gears made by casting and forging to plastic gears,. With a combination of innovative manufacturing technologies and superior materials Gear manufacturing process have become more simple and productive.
Spur gears transfer rotary motion between parallel shafts having straight teeth which are parallel to the shaft on which the gear is mounted. Spur gears are simple in design and manufacture due to their structure. There they are used for a wide array of applications.
Helical gears transmit rotary motion between crossed or parallel shafts having gear teeth that are inclined at an angle to the gear axis. As they have an Inclined angle, there are two or more teeth are always in contact with each other during gear rotation and working.
These Gears have helical angled teeth in opposition to each other. That means one is Left handed and the opposing side is Right handed helix angle. Often the both helical angled gears have a small gap in the middle to facilitate gear hobbing operation.
Double helical gears have double the contact gear tooth area compared to single helical gears and hence have more load and power transmitting abilities operating at low noise levels and high speeds.
Places where large speed reductions are needed Worm gears are usually used. The reduction ratio is determined by the number of starts of the worm and number of teeth on the worm gear. Worm gears have sliding contact which is quiet but tends to produce heat and have relatively low transmission efficiency.
Worms and worm gears offer high gear reduction and torque multiplication. A worm drive is a cylindrical gear with a shallow spiral thread that engages the worm gear in a non-intersecting, perpendicular axes configuration.
All types of industrial and household machines use Speed reducers. They are used to reduce the speed of an electric motor safely and efficiently by adjusting the motor’s speed in order to provide the torque needed by a machine to work properly.
As a transmission system, speed reducer gearboxes stand out due to their high complexity, with a myriad of speed reducer system designs available depending on the needs and specifications of each application.
