Gearboxes or gear reducers are used to alter the primary input speed from a driving source into a different output speed by using a gear or a series of gears. The output torque and speed are determined by the gear ratio. The efficiency, torque and speed of the device depend on the orientation of the gear teeth. Gearboxes with straight gear teeth are used for low speed applications, while helical gearboxes are used for the high speed applications.
There are several different types of gearboxes like Bevel, Spur, Worm, Planetary and Helical. Bevel gears are used mainly in power plants, steel plants and automotive. Spur gears are used for speed control, packaging and power plants. Worm gears are used in Mining, escalators and elevators and presses. Planetary gears are used mainly in lifts, cranes and machine tools. Helical gear are used in elevators, oil industry and cutters.
All types of gearboxes work in a similar way. Gear rotation direction relies on the input orientation and direction of the gear. If the former rotates in a clockwise direction the latter will rotate in a counter clockwise direction. The output torque and the shaft speed depend on two main elements the size of the gears and number of teeth. More output torque and lower speed is the result of high gear ratios, whereas lower gear ratios produce higher output speed and less output torque.
While selecting gearbox for specific requirement, we should consider the Speed, Output torque, Gear ratio and Gear arrangement.
Gears go through the continuous demand for a high level of efficiency and reliability, as well as an increased load carrying capacity and endurance life. When the internal parts are not continually bathed by the lubricant as during operation, the gearbox is particularly vulnerable to attacks by rust and corrosion. Hence when a gearbox is installed in the system but is going to be out of action always runs the drive for at least five minutes so as the lubricant coats the surfaces. All gearboxes must receive periodic maintenance including an oil change. Oil should be checked regularly for contamination from dirt, debris, and other fluids such as water. The oil should also be changed periodically based on hours of operation and on oil temperature.
Proper lubrication is the single most important factor in ensuring the continued performance of a gearbox. Gears and bearings require properly specified and maintained lubrication. The oil must be selected with the proper viscosity, pour point, and chemical make-up based on each application.
